The Indus Raag project is an ace initiative to cultivate, archive and promote the inspirational legacy of music traditions of the sub-continent. Locating, discovering and understanding the rich repository of indigenous music and its contemporary re-creative expression, the project attempts to establish its relevance and commonality among the South Asian countries.
The first album of the series, Indus Raag (sub-titled Music Beyond Borders) launched in 2012, earned considerable critical acclaim from noted music critics and connoisseurs. Apart from being Pakistan’s first entry in the Grammy’s, it also won a Gold Medal at the Global Music Awards (June 2016).
“Indus Raag 2 – Karachi Concerts” is a sequel to above. It comprises of more than 30 live sessions done over a period of seven years from 2009 to 2015.
The box set of 6 audio CDs and a DVD contains about ten hours of quality music featuring 65 musicians (most of them playing multiple sessions) from Pakistan, India, UK, Germany, France, Turkey and elsewhere.
Indus Raag 2 is a soundscape specific to Karachi. Home to several and diverse ethnicities, this mini-Pakistan evolved from a small coastal village, kolachi, to become a mega city and economic hub of Pakistan. The aesthetic and cultural temperament of the city springs from the heart of its rich history and cosmopolitan blend as well as the volatile brew of political and social turmoil that has been seething in the city for several years. As an album “Indus Raag” captures the melodic flavours peculiar to the spirit of the city.
